The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on 20th October, 2024 commissioned the 75kW mini-hydro power plant (Phase 2), built solely by Ghanaian engineers of Bui Power Authority and the Tsatsadu Centre of Excellence built as part of the Authority’s Corporate Social Responsibility to the people of the Alavanyo-Abehenease community in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta region of Ghana, marking a significant step in the country’s journey toward achieving clean and renewable energy goals.
In November 2020, BPA led the design and construction of a 45kW (Phase1) Tsatsadu Generating Station (TGS). The project’s construction was undertaken with Ghanaian expertise and recently expanded to generate an additional 75kW of electricity, making a total of 120kW, added to the national grid.
In his address, the Chief Executive Officer of Bui Power Authority (BPA), Hon. Ing. Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi stated, ‘’As a result of the experience gained from this project, we will be commencing a 3MW Plant at the Wli Waterfall’’. The Tsatsadu Centre of Excellence he added is built to accommodate engineering students from our universities who want practical training in hydropower plants.
Hon. John-Peter Amewu, MP for Hohoe, thanked Bui Power Authority for investing in the community’s potential and urged the people of Alavanyo to safeguard the hydro mini-dam and Centre of Excellence, highlighting their role in fostering skills, education, and innovation.
Speaking as the guest of honour, the Vice President of Ghana, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in his speech, underscored the importance of renewable energy for Ghana’s economic growth and environmental sustainability. He highlighted that the completion of the 75kW Tsatsadu mini-hydro Plant reinforces his commitment to adding 2000MW of renewable energy to the national grid, which is highly possible. The Vice President emphasised renewable energy’s role in Ghana’s economic growth and sustainability, affirming his commitment to adding 2000MW to the national grid, as demonstrated by the completion of the 75kW Tsatsadu Mini-Hydro Plant.
The Paramount Chief of Alavanyo Traditional Area, Togbega Tsedze Atakora VII, thanked the Management of BPA for its kind gesture in building a Centre of Excellence as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, designed to enhance social activities of the Alavanyo-Abehenease community and to be used by lecturers and students who undertake educational tours of the 120kW Tsatsadu Micro Hydro Generating Station.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. Archibald Yao Letsa, a member of the BPA Board, Hon. Salifu Sa-eed, the Municipal Chief Executive of Hohoe, Hon. Francis Fiakpui, the Paramount Chief of Alavanyo Traditional Area, Togbega Tsedze Atakora VII, Chiefs, Queen mothers, Management and staff of BPA as well as indigenes of the area amongst other dignitaries.
