BPA Participates in United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26)

Bui Power Authority joins Ghana’s delegation to the World Leaders’ Summit of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), also known as Conference of Parties (COP 26), being held from November 1, 2021, to November 12, 2021, in Glasgow, Scotland.

The COP26 Summit, which is one of the largest gatherings of world leaders, brings parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, led Ghana’s delegation to COP26 where he delivered a statement on Ghana’s position on Climate Change, as well as measures put in place to combat the threat it poses. He also delivered three (3) separate statements on efforts Ghana was undertaking to protect forests and the ocean, and participated in the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Summit, held on the side-lines of COP26.

Bui Power was on hand to display Renewable Energy projects achieved under its Renewable Energy Drive including the first phase of the 250MWp, 1MWp Floating Solar, 45kW Tsatsadu Micro Hydro Plant and the 404MW Bui Generating Station.

The BPA Management Team led by the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, interacted with patrons of the Ghana Pavilion during the President’s visit. He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to supporting the development of renewable energy in the West African subregion. He pointed to Ghana’s dedication to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change with the signing of the BPA Amendment Act 2020 (Act 1046) into law which positions the Authority to contribute significantly to increasing renewable energy in Ghana. The law empowers Bui Power Authority to develop renewable energy and other clean energy alternatives in the country.

Mr. Dzamesi invited patrons to the Ghana Energy Day, which is a side event organized by the UK Presidency as part of the conference.

BPA’s Renewable Energy Portfolio includes:

  • 404MW Bui Generating Station

The Bui Generating Station, located on the Black Volta River. It has an installed capacity of 404MW from four generating units including three 133.33MW generating Units and a 4MW Turbinette.

  • 250MWp Hydro Solar Hybrid Project

The first phase (50MWp Solar Plant) of the 250MWp Hydro Solar Hybrid Project commissioned in November 2020. The 50MWp plant (phase 1) is the first National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) connected solar plant in Ghana. When completed, the 250MWp hybridized with the Bui Hydroelectric Plant will be the first Hydro-Solar Hybrid (HSH) scheme in the West African subregion.

  • 45kW Tsatsadu Micro Hydro Generating Station

BPA led the design and construction of a 45kW Tsatsadu Generating Station (TGS) in Alavanyo in the Volta Region. The project was undertaken with local expertise in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Energy Commission, United Nations Development Programme, and the International Network on Small Hydro Power of China. The TGS was commissioned in November 2020. The TGS is the first micro hydro project in Ghana.

  • 5MWp Floating Solar PV

The Authority has also completed an initial 1MWp of a 5MWp Floating Solar PV System on the Bui Reservoir. It is the first of its kind in the West African subregion.

  • 30kW Rooftop Solar PV and 1kW Wind at the BPA Heights

BPA has completed a pilot 30kW Solar Project and a 1MW wind turbine at its Accra office, BPA Heights, located at #11 Dodi Link, Airport Residential Area. Power generated from these pilot projects augment the power requirement of the building.
