BPA woos investors at COP28 towards supporting Ghana’s climate change commitments to renewable energy.

Ghana took a bold stance in favour of renewable energy at the ongoing COP 28, as showcased by the Bui Power Authority (BPA) in it’s presentation.  Mr. Wisdom Togobo, on behalf of the CEO,  Hon Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, shed light on BPA’s role in steering Ghana towards renewable energy goals and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

BPA proudly outlined progress since the Paris Agreement, unveiling the successful integration of 59MW of renewable energy into Ghana’s grid by the close of 2023—a notable 3.7% boost in penetration. With collaborative efforts and a robust project pipeline, exceeding the 10% renewable energy target by 2030 appears well within reach.

BPA, in the execution of our mandate, have proactively engaged investors for the development of cashew and sugar to boost biofuel production using waste from the plants.

During the presentation, Mr. Togobo underscored the significance of collaboration and international alliances in achieving Ghana’s renewable energy objectives. He called upon developed nations to honor their climate finance commitments, aiding developing nations like Ghana in adopting cleaner energy sources. BPA is actively seeking financial support for crucial areas such as research, project implementation, and technology deployment.

Concluding on an optimistic note, BPA expressed confidence in Ghana’s journey towards a sustainable future. The implementation of renewable energy projects not only fights climate change but also ushers in economic benefits such as job creation and enhanced energy security. Throughout, BPA’s commitment to transparency reinforced its dedication to sustainable development.

The CEO of BPA Hon Samuel Dzamesi who was also present at the meeting, in an interview, assured prospective investors of the enabling environment put in place by BPA to guarantee return on their investment.

As COP 28 progresses, Ghana’s resolute commitment to renewable energy stands out as an inspiring example. BPA, by showcasing accomplishments and laying out future plans, effectively communicated Ghana’s steadfast determination to transition to a greener and more sustainable energy landscape. With continued global support, Ghana aims to emerge as a frontrunner in the global fight against climate change.
