The CEO of Bui Power Authority, Hon. Ing. Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi has engaged various heads of energy institutions across Europe and Africa. The interaction, focused on addressing critical issues including accelerating projects and investments, integrating decarbonization policies, and navigating the challenges posed by global climate goals to Africa’s development.
He met the agencies at the 2024 Africa Energy Forum in Barcelona, Spain which was held on the theme “Energy Systems of the Future – Balancing Africa’s Needs with Global Goals” from June 25th to June 28th, 2024. The meeting, which was held in a closed-door Utilities Roundtable was Chaired by Mr. Kweku Awotwi, Board Chairman, United Bank for Africa (Ghana) & Co-Founder & Director Cenpower Generation Company.
At the meeting, Hon. Ing. Dzamesi emphasized the importance of innovative approaches to energy solutions with Bui Power Authority being the first company in the West African Sub-Region to undertake the floating solar PV system which could pave the way for similar projects across Africa and beyond. The integration of solar and hydro resource presents a model for maximizing renewable energy potential while minimizing land use. He further stated that, “Africa must leverage cutting-edge technologies and robust partnerships to accelerate its energy transition. Our commitment at Bui Power Authority is to lead this charge through sustainable and impactful projects.”
During the forum, the Minister for Energy, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, participated in the Ministerial Roundtable on June 25th, where African Energy Ministers discussed future energy systems and balancing Africa’s needs with global goals. In a separate meeting, the Minister and energy sector leaders engaged with the UK Trade Commissioner for Africa, focusing on strategically positioning Ghana’s energy sector for investment, particularly from the UK.
The “Investing in Ghana” session on June 27th further showcased Ghana’s energy investment opportunities especially in the field of Renewable Energy. Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh in his presentation underscored the nation’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development, emphasizing initiatives such as the Renewable Energy Master Plan and the Integrated Power Sector Master Plan.
BPA’s participation at the AEF provided a crucial platform to highlight its ongoing projects and plans, including the development of solar PV and wind plants, and the integration of a 30MWAh Lithium Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with its 250MW Solar PV Plant. “The future of Africa’s energy lies in embracing renewable sources and innovative technologies. At BPA, we are focused on expanding our renewable energy portfolio and incorporating advanced storage solutions,” said the CEO of Bui Power Authority in his engagements with potential investors.
BPA’s efforts are supported through robust Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), employing the EPC+F model to leverage private investment for large-scale energy projects. This approach enhances both funding and expertise, crucial for the successful implementation of these initiatives.
The Africa Energy Forum brought together a diverse group of leaders, including Deputy Heads of States, Secretaries of State, Energy Sector Ministers, CEOs amongst many others. Their contributions highlighted the collaborative spirit necessary to drive significant progress in the energy sector, contributing to sustainable development and economic growth in Ghana and beyond.
