The Ministry of Energy on July 22nd 2024, held a farewell durbar in honor of the outgoing minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO.
At the ceremony, the Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, commended Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh’s result-oriented leadership, which ensured the Ministry’s ability to weather challenges during his tenure. She applauded his ability to foster unity and produce significant results.
In his remarks, the newly appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, Hon. Herbert Krapa, recounted fond memories of times when he and Hon. Prempeh’s professional and political careers had crossed paths. He particularly praised Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh’s tireless efforts on the energy transition agenda and applauded his integrity and vision for transforming the energy sector.
The CEO of Bui Power Authority, Hon. Ing. Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi, led sector heads of the various SOE’s under the ministry to express their appreciation to the departing minister for his steadfast support. They recognized Dr. Prempeh’s commitment and teamwork, which has greatly aided in the development and stability in the energy land scape.
Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh expressed immense gratitude to various stakeholders, including Bui Power Authority, Volta River Authority (VRA), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and GRIDCo, for their hard work in ensuring the sustainability of the sector. He proudly mentioned his successful efforts in addressing the country’s power supply issues, coining the term “Dum Sie Sie” to represent the progress made from the previous “Dumsor” (power outages).
Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh also stated that a $12 billion private sector investment will roll out soon for the petroleum hub project in Jomoro, Western Region. He highlighted that this project is the first of its kind in the Sub-Saharan Africa and a significant achievement for the country.
He further emphasized the significance of Ghana becoming the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to pursue nuclear power, highlighting the nation’s ongoing energy transition. He acknowledged his predecessors and supporters, including those who had been by his side since his days as a minister long before he took office at the Ministry of Energy, one of them, significantly, being the CEO of Bui Power Authority, Hon. Ing. Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi.
The durbar was a moment of reflection and celebration of Dr. Prempeh’s contributions to Ghana’s energy sector, as well as his ongoing commitment to the country’s progress in his new political role.
In her vote of thanks, the Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, wished Hon. Prempeh the best of luck as he embarks on another step in his political career.
