Bui Power Authority developed the Tsatsadu Generating Station (TGS), Ghana’s first grid-connected mini hydropower plant, located on the Tsatsadu River and close to the scenic Tsatsadu Waterfalls in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region. Originally commissioned in 2019 with an installed capacity of 45kW, the plant underwent a successful expansion in November 2024 under Phase II. This upgrade introduced an additional 100kW Turgo turbine-generator unit, increasing the station’s total installed capacity to 145kW and significantly enhancing its contribution to clean and reliable power supply in the area.

Clean Energy Through Innovation

TGS is a run-of-river hydropower facility, generating electricity by utilizing the natural flow of the Tsatsadu River without the need for a large reservoir. This approach reduces environmental impact while efficiently harnessing a renewable energy resource. The project supports Ghana’s national agenda to increase renewable energy in its generation mix to 10% by 2030, strengthen rural electrification, and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy solutions.
