The Bui Power Authority (BPA) received a novelty centre dubbed the FRED OWARE INNOVATION CENTER (FOIC) from the sole financier of the centre, Fred Oware.
FOIC aims at strengthening interest in science, technology and robotics among individuals within the Bui enclave. The Center was commissioned on October 21, 2020 as a gift from the Chief Executive Officer of BPA, Mr. Fred Oware to the Resettlement Townships and the Banda community at large. The Centre boasts of an ICT and Robotics Laboratory, a Science Laboratory and generic library.
FOIC has since drawn up a curriculum for ICT and Robotics and thus far, 114 candidates from the Resettlement Townships have signed on. These candidates have been divided into separate cohorts based on their educational level. This allows for easy access to the facility at any given time and has resulted in the full implementation of the center and curriculum every single week since January 2021.
The FOIC has engaged in some outreach activities, targeting schools outside the Bui township to whip up more interest in its activities.
During the occasion of International Women’s Day in March 2021, FOIC spearheaded a sensitization durbar aimed at educating members within the Resettlement Township on the need to empower the female child and to maintain menstrual hygiene. Health officials who were invited to the durbar encouraged the females present to strive to get education. They also urged them to consider careers in Science, Technology and Engineering.
